You know, every time I think about these shells, shells that Tony Wells found back in the early 1970's, shells that he asked his mom to hang on to for him, and she did, it just makes me laugh---I mean really, it so perfectly fits the treasure-in-the-attic story! And, for the person who collected them and then re-found them again in his mom's closet 47 years later to be a sunken treasure hunter who'd traveled the world, having adventure after adventure diving some of the most famous wrecks in history, well, it's just such a terrific story, isn't it? Congrats Tony, what a story! So, 47 years ago, Tony Wells and his dive buddies discovered a favorite spot they used to call, The Tessie Hole, and over a span of 4 years, they found quite a handful of tessellatas there, making it indeed the Tessie Hole.

Of course, you may wish to know where Tony's secret spot was, I did! But unfortunately Tony was suspiciously vague when it came to remembering exactly where that spot was. In fact, like so many collectors who could tell you every single detail about the circumstances surrounding their rare find--- Well, you know it was 10:02 in the morning, I was diving in 43.2 feet of water, visibility was good. 33 miles, the water temperature at that depth was 67.2 degrees, the piece of dead branch coral it was attached to was 1.9cm by 32cm, I'd been in the water for 14 and a quarter minutes and had 1522 lbs of air left in my tank...

I mean, they remember everything perfectly, until it comes to telling you where they'd found that rare beauty. Suddenly their memory becomes rotten--- Well, we'd been drinking quite a bit the night before, the moon was out, there was a strong wind and current moving the boat all over the place, our anchor failed to catch, so we drifted to God knows where, we couldn't see the shore, didn't know it would be important, you know, I think we were close to Oahu, but don't quote me on that... Yep, listening to Tony answer my question as to where he'd found his rare beauties did indeed bring back old shell club memories.

So, we're not going to be getting that secret out of him any time soon, but don't worry. Anyhow, 47 years ago Tony found in dead branch coral in 35-45 feet of water on the West coast of Oahu, 4 tessies and a bagful of other great Hawaiian cowries at his Tessie Hole, including this baby, a gorgeous, live collected, very near-GEM tessellata, just the sort of thing you would expect a world-renown sunken treasure hunter to find and do---to begin his treasure hunting career by finding handfuls of some of the rarest shells in the world like this, and as the photos show, this is a terrific beauty that will look fantastic sitting on your shelf!

The perfect rare shell for a first-rate collection.. I have tried my best to make sure the photos are accurate color-wise, but as everyone knows, color is a... And I thought I would get to do nothing all day long once I retired... Oh what false dreams we live with!

Anyhow, if you have read this far, you have my sincerest apologies and a heartfelt wish from those of us at Island Shells of happy collecting. Enjoy your new treasures and remember, home is where your collection is! Cypraea tessellata #1 27.1mm. If you have questions, we are here to answer them! Please ask us if you have any questions.
